Murder Most Yowl edition by Quinn Dressler Romance eBooks Reviews
4.5* Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.
Trying to live up to his father’s expectations was a losing battle and when Cameron Sherwood watches an innocent man die, it serves as a wake-up call. Now the proud owner of the Cat’s Meow, Cam spends his day catering to fussy cat owners and their feline companions. He’s no longer in the closet, no longer investigating murders and he finds himself much happier for it. If he could just get his sister to stop trying to set him up on dates, life would be almost perfect. When looking after a client’s cat leads to the discovery of said client’s body, however, Cam finds himself reluctantly pulled back into the life he left behind. With a case that’s more convoluted than originally thought, a sheriff as attractive as he is frustrating, and a blind date on the horizon, Cam will have to keep his wits about him if he wants to come out unscathed.
This was such a great read! I loved the characters, both human and feline; they were all unique and worked really well in the story. Cam and Jake were great together and their rough beginning professionally was tempered nicely when they began to get to know one another personally. Their dynamic was great both on the case and off of it and they worked together so well you’d think they’d been partners for years instead of a few days. They mystery itself was fantastic; the author did a really good job with the plot. Everything flowed wonderfully and, best of all, I never figured out what was really going on until the big reveal at the end. I loved that!
This is a new author for me and I was really impressed; there was a lot packed into this story but it all just worked so well it felt as though you’d been reading a much longer book. I was entertained from start to finish and was sorry to see the book end. While there isn’t a series listed for it yet, I have hopes that there will be more in the future with these characters and, in the meantime, I’ll happily read this one again.

This sounded like a great cozy mystery from the blurb. Cam is all about the cat, so much so that he’s opened his own cat store, and anything cat-related is in it. He also cat sits for Mr. Muffin Top (yes, seriously) when party planner and kitty owner Fran Welch is out of town. Discovering her dead in her office is not part of his job anymore, yet it leads him to the local sheriff, Jake O’Neil, who takes an instant dislike to Cam and his existence.
When their respective sisters set the two of them up on a blind date, Cam and Jake suddenly find they’ve lots in common, and then they’re all about the together time. I know this is a shorter story, but it still felt rushed and lacking. Additionally, Cam not speaking up at the crime scene about his previous law enforcement days and just taking the foulness spewing forth from Jake’s mouth makes the dinner scenario even more implausible.
The plot had great potential, but it felt lacking when all was said and done. The pacing was good, and though there were a number of peripheral characters involved, they felt one dimensional, not really adding to the overall richness of the world created. I liked both main characters, I truly did. I loved the twist of the party planner and her doings. However, overall the novel felt forced. I never really felt the connection between Cam and Jake. It isn’t really a mystery, and it isn’t really a romance. It’s a strange hybrid. In the end, I’m rating this at three stars, which references as “It’s okay.” That sums up my feelings pretty accurately.

I love a great murder mystery! The clues, the suspense, the characters. When you start those kinds of books you get ready to seriously focus. You think you’re Nancy Drew, Jessica Fletcher, and Columbo all in one. That is why I wanted to read Murder Most Yowl.
The two MC’s Cam and Jake were very entertaining. Cam is former NCIS, currently owning a cat store. Jake is the Sherriff of the town they live in. Theirs is an enemies to lovers sort of situation but it’s so fast moving that the enemy part doesn’t last long. Cam is hilarious, I’ll give him that. For NCIS however, he wasn’t very bright when it came to protocol, and the professionalism between Cam and Jake over a murder investigation was nonexistent. But I came for the mystery!
We have a murder, and out there somewhere is a killer. I really enjoyed the poking around it was very old fashion detective work. Problem was there was discrepancies in the story. Example without giving the story away; Cam meets a housekeeper who tells him some “rumors” and while talking explains people in the house and an incident. But when Cam hears about one of the people later in the story he doesn’t know them. I hope that makes sense. It was glaring to me. It wasn’t like he had to hide the knowing, especially when it was to Jake. If I misunderstood this whole part then that’s a bit concerning too. Regardless at that point in the book I began to worry.
The reveal itself was decent in the sense bad guy caught, but there were holes. A fair amount. The ending, which I was so excited about when the scene started, ended abruptly. Here and gone and not tied together.
All in all it was funny, and entertaining but it needs a little work. A read through perhaps that will fill the holes and, though not detrimental to the mystery, very important to the story structure.
This was such a joy to read. I highly recommend it. Hope there will be more stories with Cameron and Jake.
